An engawa is the narrow wooden veranda or corridor running along the outside edge of a traditional Japanese house, forming a gentle transition between the interior and the garden.
This tenugui captures a serene Japanese summer scene. A glass bowl with goldfish sits on the engawa in the shade of the house. You can almost see the wind chime moving in the wind against the bamboo blind. So tranquil!
This hand-dyed tenugui features intricate artwork, created by Todaya Shoten, a famous tenugui maker in Nihonbashi, Japan. The photos can only do it certain justice. You'll be impressed when actually looking at it!
About tenugui

Tenugui are very thin pieces of cotton fabric. You can use them for pretty much anything. While they are traditionally used as a hand towel because of their superiour absorption properties, you can use them as a table runner, wrap, head scarf (they are commonly used as a head band in Kendo), and even just as a decorative tapestry piece.
Traditional tenugui have short edges that are unhemmed. This means they are frayed at the shorter ends, which is completely normal. The fraying will stop naturally and lock into place after a few washes.

About Todaya Shoten Rienzome
Founded in Nihonbashi in 1872, Todaya Shoten has been creating distinctive tenugui that blend traditional Japanese craftsmanship with bold, original design. Each Rienzome (their flagship brand) tenugui is made from high-quality natural cotton and crafted largely by hand, giving the fabric a warmth and character that machine production cannot reproduce.
Specially woven “Nioka” and “Wakamatsu” fabrics offer exceptional softness, durability, absorbency, and a refined feel that improves with use. Traditional Chusen hand-dyeing allows the color to penetrate deeply through the fibers, creating rich, expressive tones on both sides of the cloth. Hand-carved and precision machine-carved stencils are carefully selected to suit each design, ensuring even intricate patterns are reproduced beautifully.
Repeated washing over time softens the fabric and gently develops the color. This gives each tenugui a unique and evolving character. Combining heritage, craftsmanship and sensibility, Rienzome tenugui are both practical and beautiful.

Returns
- 30 day return policy for a refund due to change of mind, provided the item has not been opened or used. Shipping fees to be covered by the customer in these instances.
- We do individually check each item when it is packed. If for any reason there is a defect or an item is damaged during shipping, rest assured we will provide a full refund, or you can choose for a new item to be sent (please provide evidence of the damage). We cover shipping fees in this case.

How long does shipping take?
Orders are packed and shipped within 2 business days, although over 95% of our orders are packed and shipped within 1 business day.
Delivery times will then take between 2-8 business days for standard shipping (by Sendle or Australia post), or 1-4 business days for express Australia post shipping, depending on the carrier status. We currently do not ship internationally.

All of our tenugui are authentic Japan made products sourced from reputable manufacturers and brands in Japan.
How do I care for my tenugui?

How should I wash my tenugui?
It is best to hand wash your tenugui in cold water, separate from other fabrics as dye may transfer in the first few washes. If you wash in a washing machine, place in a washing net, and wash with like colours.

My name is Ken and I run this small business of wanting to introduce more Japanese bento culture into Australia. I'm based in Sydney, and I started this business during the pandemic after quitting my full-time job to find and fulfill something I am passionate about.
Is Majime Life a legitimate business?

Washing
- It is recommended to hand wash separately from other fabrics.
- When washing for the first time, some dye may release.
- Wash in plenty of cold water.
- Machine washable in a net, but highly recommended to hand wash as colour may transfer to other fabrics.
- Avoid soaking in water.
Handling
- Do not purposedly pull on the loose frays at the ends.
- Due to the traditional chusen dyeing method, the color may transfer due to sweat or friction when you first start using it, so please be careful.
Ironing
If ironing, use medium heat. You can use a separate fabric in between the tenugui and iron if concerned about the tenugui.
Drying
- Best to dry in shade.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
Other
- Do not tumble dry.
- Do not dry or wet clean.
- Do not bleach.
